Kinky hair is different and stands out from the rest (no pun intended) because it’s capable of forming so many different shapes and patterns.
The same properties of ethnic hair that make it amazing can also be frustrating when it’s not understood. It’s this lack of understanding that gives it negative labels.
Misconception #1: Black hair can’t grow past the shoulders.
While it may appear that coiled hair is unable to grow longer than shoulder length, the truth is, coiled hair lacks the ability to moisturize itself.
Due to its tight curls, the natural oils from the scalp cannot travel the length of the strands. This leaves kinky hair dry and more prone to breakage. African American hair actually grows no slower than any other hair type, but when someone fails to care for their strands properly it can break just as fast as it grows, leading everyone to believe it never grew at all.
Misconception #2: Relaxed is healthier
Sure, straight hair looks nice and gives a smooth appearance, but once coily hair has been chemically altered with relaxers, it takes even more maintenance because the protein has been sucked from the hair. Protein is what gives hair strength, while moisture gives hair its flexibility. Chemical relaxers strip both from hair.
Misconception #3: Coily hair is unmanageable
I’ll admit, it does seem that way at first glance. Especially with the most coarse textures. There is no shape or definite curl pattern and it seems to have a personality of its own. This doesn’t mean it’s unmanageable.
This only means it requires more time and patience to properly manage it. Most people cringe at the idea of having to detangle coily hair. The root pulling and nail snagging is a nightmare!
Unfortunately, most people don’t realize that all kinky hair needs is to be groomed in the opposite direct than finer textures: this means start grooming from the ends and move towards the roots of the hair. This minimizes the painful pulling and unnecessary tearing of perfectly healthy strands. Does it take more work? Absolutely. Is the extra effort worth it? Definitely.
Don’t feel alarmed if you’ve discovered you once believed these misconceptions. Most of us grew up being told one thing and believed it simply because we trusted the messenger. The only way to truly accept something is to understand it. Coily hair is no different. It’s not something you should be afraid to embrace and there’s definitely no reason to be angry about something so unique and versatile. Understand it, love it, and it will grow.
