Spider Monkey Care and Information
Spider Monkeys are among some of the more difficult exotic pets to care for. They can be very complicated to keep. Their exotic nature requires much more attention and care then your traditional domesticated pet. They are primates and are very intelligent animals. Hygiene and disease are two of the utmost important factors to pay special attention to.
When looking to purchase a Spider monkey, look for reputable breeder /dealer. Ask for references and contact those references. Primates are prime candidates for illegal trade so it is very important to know who you are buying from. Spider monkeys from the wild are not fit for keeping as pets.
When choosing the habitat for your spider monkey, keep in mind that they have extremely strong prehensile tails and will spend most of their time in the trees. A strong climbing habitat is very important. Research the material you are going to use to construct the habitat and make sure it is all natural and non-toxic.
Spider monkeys are from the tropical Americas and therefore need to be kept in a climate similar to that. Temperature and humidity should be kept at optimal conditions at all times. Ideal temperatures would be in the mid 80’s to mid 90’s and should never drop below 75. Cold weather and drafts can cause respiratory illness and death if not caught soon.
Maybe one of the most difficult things of owing a pet spider monkey is finding a qualified veterinarian. First place to look would be the person you purchased the monkey from as a reputable dealer will have a good relationship with their vet. If they are not in your area, do some research and ask around. Make sure the vet is qualified to see exotic pets. Not just any vet will know how to treat them and medications to give.
Diet for your spider monkey is very important. 90% fruit and nuts are going to make up the majority of the diet. There are also a few commercial diets now such as Zupreem Primate Diet. While these commercial diets are good, there is only so much you can put in a pellet. The fruit and nuts need to be the primary source of food.
If you have other pets in your house, make sure there is no unsupervised playtime. Domestic animals can be very territorial and may try to compete with the monkey. Spider Monkeys are also very curious critters and things may get out of hand if not supervised.
